You have more options than you think

Most people think HealthCare.gov is the only place to look. It's one of several.

Your renewal notice shows up with a higher number on it. You log in, scroll through a long list of plans that all look the same, pick the one that stings the least, and hope your doctor is still in network. Then you find out what the plan really covers when the first bill arrives.

We understand how overwhelming insurance options can be and we're here to help. In Florida you have two doors: the ACA Marketplace and private plans sold outside it. Behind each door are a lot of plans, and my job is finding the one that fits you. A price you can live with and coverage you can count on aren't always a trade-off.

ACA Marketplace plans

Marketplace plans are the ones you buy through HealthCare.gov. They follow the Affordable Care Act's rules, which is why a lot of people start here.

Depending on your household income, you may qualify for a tax credit that lowers your premium. I'll check what you qualify for before you pick anything.

Private plans, including PPOs

Private plans, also called off-exchange plans, are bought outside HealthCare.gov.

PPOs are available to individuals, not just to employer groups. A PPO (preferred provider organization) is a plan type built around a network of preferred doctors and hospitals. I check whether yours are in it before you enroll.

Private plans can have you covered by next month. That timing applies to private plans only, not to the Marketplace.

Straight talk: some private plans use health questions and may not cover pre-existing conditions or every ACA benefit, so I walk you through what each plan does and doesn't cover before you decide.

Family health plans

Covering your spouse and kids on one plan keeps things simple: one plan, one renewal, one person to call.

The monthly premium is only part of it. Add the deductible (what you pay for care before the plan starts sharing the cost) and the out-of-pocket maximum (the most you'd pay for covered care in a year). That total yearly cost is what tells you which plan actually fits your family.

Self-employed and 1099 coverage

I know this one from the inside. When I went all in on insurance, it was full-time and commission-only, so I know what it's like when your income moves around month to month.

Both Marketplace and private plans can work when you're self-employed. If you have an EIN, even as a business of one, you can also look at private association plans, which pool low-risk individuals together and can lower costs. If you go the Marketplace route, your income estimate matters, because it drives your savings, so we get it right before you apply. Have employees? See small business health insurance.

When you can enroll

Marketplace plans: 2027 open enrollment runs November 1, 2026 to January 15, 2027. Enroll by December 15 for coverage that starts January 1. Outside that window, enrolling generally takes a qualifying life event.

Private plans: these don't follow the Marketplace calendar. Private plans can have you covered by next month.

Individual and family health insurance FAQ

Can I get a PPO as an individual in Florida?

Yes. PPOs are available to individuals, not just groups. Networks and premiums vary, so Darius checks whether your doctors are in network before you enroll.

What's the difference between Marketplace and private plans?

Marketplace plans are bought through HealthCare.gov and can come with income-based savings. Private plans are bought outside the Marketplace, can be covered by next month, and some use health questions. Darius compares both.

When is open enrollment for 2027 in Florida?

Nov 1, 2026 through Jan 15, 2027 for Marketplace plans. Enroll by Dec 15 for Jan 1 coverage. Private plans follow their own timing. (HealthCare.gov)

Does it cost anything to use a health insurance broker?

No. Carriers pay the broker, and your premium is generally the same as buying direct. (HealthCare.gov)

Can I cover my whole family on one plan?

Usually, yes. Marketplace and many private plans offer family coverage. Compare the total yearly cost, not just the monthly premium.

I'm self-employed. What are my options?

Marketplace plans, private plans, and sometimes PPOs. Your income estimate affects Marketplace savings, so Darius helps you compare before you apply. Tax deduction questions go to your CPA.
