Your business has more options than NY State of Health

Your options don't end at the state marketplace.

Say you own a restaurant with a dozen people on staff. You want to offer health insurance, so you look up the state's Small Business Marketplace, see what's listed, and decide that's the whole picture. Maybe it works. Maybe it costs more than it has to, and nobody ever showed you the rest of the menu. Sorting through group rules between lunch and dinner service is a lot.

The state's Small Business Marketplace is one route. Here are the others:

  • Group plans bought directly from insurers
  • ICHRA, where you give employees a tax-free allowance toward their own plans
  • Private group plans for business owners, including owners with no employees

I compare all of them side by side, the state's marketplace included, so you can see what each one means for your budget and your team before you commit to anything.

The marketplace isn't the problem. Not knowing what else is out there is. Taking care of your team and protecting your budget aren't always a trade-off. Here's how it works: fill out the quote form or schedule a call, we compare your options side by side, and you fill out a quick application.

We understand how overwhelming insurance options can be and we're here to help. I'm licensed in New York, based in Melbourne, Florida, working with New York employers by phone and video. My team and I bring over 10 years of combined experience. We've helped over 450 clients save an average of $350 a month. Results vary; savings depend on your situation.

Built for New York teams of 1 to 100+ employees

In New York, a small group is 1 to 100 employees, not counting spouses and dependents, and a business with 80 employees gets the same small-group rules as a business with 8. I also help businesses with more than 100 employees compare their options.

Timing is on your side, too. New York insurers have to accept small groups year-round, so you can start coverage when you're ready instead of waiting on a season.

Group plans bought directly from insurers

These are group plans from New York-licensed insurers, bought straight from the insurance company. They're community rated, which means your employees' ages and health don't change the group's rate.

So what does move the price? The plan design, the metal level (how the plan splits costs between the premium and your care), your region, and the coverage tiers your employees pick, like employee-only or family. Change those, and the number changes. That's where a side-by-side helps most.

Private group plans for business owners

Business owners with an EIN may qualify for private group plans approved for sale in New York, even as a group of one. Private association plans let business owners join a larger group, which spreads risk and can lower costs for everyone. Darius will check what fits. Results vary.

ICHRA (CHOICE Arrangement) for New York teams

An ICHRA (individual coverage health reimbursement arrangement) is a federal, tax-free reimbursement employers use so employees can buy their own individual plans. You set the budget, and each employee picks the plan that works for them. HealthCare.gov now calls it a CHOICE Arrangement.

In New York, your employees choose from community-rated individual plans, which for 2027 are HMOs and EPOs. More from HealthCare.gov on CHOICE Arrangements.

The state's Small Business Marketplace and tax credit

The federal Small Business Health Care Tax Credit is available only through NY State of Health's Small Business Marketplace, generally for employers with fewer than 25 full-time-equivalent employees. Darius can help you check whether you qualify. More in the Small Business Marketplace FAQ.

If the credit fits your business, I can help you with the marketplace route too. If it doesn't, the other routes on this page are open.

Questions New York business owners ask

Do I have to use NY State of Health to offer my employees health insurance?

No. You can buy group plans directly from insurers, offer an ICHRA, or, as a business owner with an EIN, look at private group plans approved for sale in New York. The federal small business tax credit is the one thing only available through NY State of Health's marketplace.

How does New York define a small business for health insurance?

As a group of 1 to 100 employees, not counting spouses and dependents. Businesses with 51 to 100 employees follow the same small-group rules. (DFS FAQ)

Do my employees' ages affect our group premium in New York?

No. NY small group plans are community rated, so premiums don't vary by age, sex, health status, tobacco use, or occupation. (NY Ins. Law §3231)

Can my company sign up for group coverage any time of year?

Yes. New York insurers must accept small groups year-round, so you don't have to wait for an enrollment season. (NY Ins. Law §3231(a)(2))

Can I get group coverage if I'm the only person on the plan?

Possibly. Business owners with an EIN may qualify for private group plans approved for sale in New York, even as a group of one. Darius will check what fits; results vary.

Can I offer an ICHRA in New York?

Yes. It's a federal arrangement, now also called a CHOICE Arrangement, and employees use it to buy New York individual coverage. (HealthCare.gov)
